An Equestrian & Equine
Trail: 10 km/6 mi, OCTRA Sanctioned Special Event.
Impact resistant protective headgear with harness properly fitted and secured, must be worn while riding anywhere on the competition grounds and on trail. Footwear with heels (not less than 1cm), or use of breakaway stirrups, or use of basket/cage type stirrup covers while mounted is mandatory for all riders under the age of 18 years and is recommended for all adult riders. Any equestrian may be *sponsored, closely following competitor on trail.
Equine must be five years of age or older and pass pre-ride and mid-ride veterinary inspections. All participants and *Sponsors subject to OCTRA event entry conditions including completion of standard ride entry form, OCTRA membership or day-membership, insurance coverage and EIA negative test result.
Procedure on Trail:
- Trail courtesy applies ~ competitors must ask permission to pass, on left and only when safe to do so, and you may only continue on trail when equestrian just passed has full control of their equine and grants permission. Suspected or known kickers must display a red ribbon in their tail. Equine heartrate monitors are not permitted. Spurs, crops or whips are not permitted.
Procedure at Midpoint:
- Stop & Go Pulse Check of 64 bpm recorded on team scorecard by Veterinarian/Control Judge.
- Water, cooling area and tie rope provided for equine at midpoint.
Procedure at Finish line:
- Time recorded on team scorecard by Timer, scorecard to be presented by equestrian.
- Equestrian dismounts leading equine partner to designated cooling area, then securely holds equine to act as a post ensuring safety. Equestrian instructs both team members on the removal of bridle and placement of halter.
Cooling procedure:
Equestrian further instructs both team members on how best to cool their horse while securely holding the equine. During this time all teams are permitted to receive verbal assistance from anyone including pulse checks.
Pulse Timing procedure:
- Equestrian presents their equine when ready (within 30 minutes of crossing finishing line) to Pulse Technician. Each team is permitted one courtesy reading only and advice from a technician. Pulse Technician records Pulse and Pulse Time on scorecard if 60 bpm or lower. This is the Triple Crown Event Team’s FINISHING TIME and determines PLACINGS, once finishing criteria is then successfully met.
Vetting procedure and Finishing Criteria:
- All team members present equine to the Control Judge, but either biker or runner must perform the required trot-out. Presenter may receive verbal instructions and encouragement from the equestrian and their remaining team member. Should equine not be willing to trot, or not complete a full trot-out after first attempt, equine will be trotted again by the equestrian. (Control Judge will determine quality of trot-out and if a second trot-out by the equestrian is warranted to meet the finishing criteria).
Finishing and Triple Crown Relay placing:
Pulse of 60 bpm within 30 minutes of crossing finishing line, and “fit to continue” finishing criteria met.
